Hey manga fans I am going to be trying out a new series here. Once a week I’ll go over a bunch of titles coming out next month. If any of them look interesting to you shoot me an email (daniel@midwestmanga.com) and I’ll order you a copy. If you live in the Michiana area you can even pick it up locally.
1. No Matter What You Say, Furi-san is Scary! Vol. 1
Seiichi Kinoue
On Sale: November 2, 2021
Trade Paperback $13.99 USD
I am a sucker for a cute romantic pairing, especially when one is normal and the other is extraordinary. Just from the description and preview pages this is giving me Miss Nagatoro vibes. So if you like that one you should consider giving this one a try.
An ordinary high school boy is terrified of his scary-looking (but secretly sweet!) yankii girl classmate in a romantic comedy of crushes and misunderstandings.
Furi Youko definitely looks like a delinquent: she’s got a tough-girl image that wouldn’t be out of place in a gang. When Taira Namito finds himself sitting next to her in his high school class, he’s immediately afraid of her. But as it turns out, Furi’s rough-and-tumble exterior hides a wholesome, totally cute person underneath—and she’s got the hots for Taira. (Not that he has any idea, of course.) One misunderstanding leads to another in this romantic comedy about a clueless dude and the adorable, slightly terrifying affections of the tough girl by his side!
2.The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today Vol.2
Hitsuji Yamada
On Sale: November 2, 2021
Trade Paperback $13.99 USD
One of my favorite things about manga that sets it apart from American comic books is the really out there, but unique ideas. For example, this manga with a big anthropomorphic cat that does housework. It just feels so charming!
Birthday Surprise!
Saku’s boss’s niece, Yume-chan, is having a birthday bash and Saku and Yukichi are invited! They can’t exactly parade a giant, bipedal cat out in public, but they also don’t want to disappoint Yume-chan. How will they get themselves out of this pickle?! There’s never a shortage of chaos and confusion in the Fukuzawa household, but at the end of the day, this messy office worker and skillful cat make it work!
3. Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games Vol. 1
Eri Ejima
On Sale: November 2, 2021
Trade Paperback $12.99 USD
The cover looks a little too cutesy for my taste and initially turned me off, but then I saw the preview pages and did a complete 180. What sold me were the over the top expressions. It’s nice to see girls depicted as real people with real emotions instead of as just pretty, ditzy dolls.
This over-the-top comedy about delicate young ladies indulging in hardcore gaming is soon to be an anime!
Kuromi Girls’ Academy is a refined, elegant school that expects the very best in deportment from its young ladies. Aya got into this peerless rich-girls’ institution on a scholarship, and hopes to grow as lovely as her fellow student and idol, the so-called “Shirayuri-sama.” But Shirayuri hides a terrible secret: she’s a trash-talking, combo-chaining, newbie-stomping, ruthless hardcore gamer! Could a mutual indulgence in no-holds-barred video game combat grow into a deeper rapport between these two girls?
4. Three Chinese Danmei (Boys Love) Novels
Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi (Novel) Vol. 1
Heaven Official’s Blessing: Tian Guan Ci Fu (Novel) Vol. 1
The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System: Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong (Novel) Vol. 1
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
On Sale: December 14, 2021
Trade Paperback $19.99 USD
Honestly not really something I am interested myself, but it is a significant enough event to be worth highlighting. Apparently these novels are mega popular and a first of its kind with an official English Translation. If you like boys love novels
This historical fantasy tale of two powerful men who find each other through life and death is now in English, for the very first time.
Wei Wuxian was once one of the most powerful men of his generation, a talented and clever young cultivator who harnessed martial arts and spirituality into powerful abilities. But when the horrors of war led him to seek more power through demonic cultivation, the world’s respect for his abilities turned to fear, and his death was celebrated throughout the land.
Years later, he awakens in the body of an aggrieved young man who sacrifices his soul so that Wei Wuxian can exact revenge on his behalf. Though granted a second life, Wei Wuxian is not free from his first, nor the mysteries that appear before him now. Yet this time, he’ll face it all with the righteous and esteemed Lan Wangji at his side, another powerful cultivator whose unwavering dedication and shared memories of their past will help shine a light on the dark truths that surround them.
